VESSEL HISTORY: According to The Virginia Pilot newspaper, June 12, 1991:A familiar sight on the Rappahannock River was the ”Kate H. Tilghman,” built in 1881 in Maryland. The vessel was named after the daughter of William B. Tilghman, a wealthy businessman in Salisbury, Maryland. In 1889 the schooner still operated out of Salisbury, Maryland. It's frequent cargo was lumber, but it hauled other materials as well. In her last years she was owned and operated by Capt. R.O. Smith Sr. of Urbanna who lived on Oakes Landing Road near Saluda. W.C. Cannon of Urbanna was also master at one time. The Ledger-Star reported on October 20, 1936 that the coast guard cutter Apache "was endeavoring to float the schooner Kate H. Tilghman" which was ashore in the Rappahannock river. Abandoned in Urbanna Creek on Rosegill shore, Virginia about 1945. The centerboard trunk and ribs of the vessel could still be seen in the shallows into the 2020s. INVENTORY: Ship wheel mechanism - there is one (1) component part.CL1713
